Brett Dennen Gets Baseball Fever for 'Comeback Kid (That's My Dog)' Video

With his new video for 'Comeback Kid (That's My Dog),' Brett Dennen got to two things most people only dream about: Getting to rock out in front of a huge crowd and stand on a professional baseball stadium's field.

Spinner recently caught up with the California native to talk about the video for the track, which is off his album 'Loverboy,' his devotion to the Oakland A's and what song he'd pick for his at-bat music.

How did you get the opportunity to record a video at the A's ballpark?

The Oakland Athletics reached out to my manager and asked if I was interested in doing something with them at a game. They were aware that I am a fan. They thought it would be fun for me to sing 'Take Me Out to the Ballgame,' which I quickly said yes to, because it's always been a dream of mine. We came up with the idea to shoot the music video, because at the time, we were in the process of coming up with a story for the music video. Thankfully they agreed, and they and Major League Baseball were very generous with us and allowed us to pretty much use whatever footage we shot.

Northern California funk-folk prophet Brett Dennen has a positive demeanor that shines not only in his music, but through his work for non-profits. Before playing this year's SXSW festival, Dennen sat down with Spinner to discuss his role at children's education organization the Mosaic Project and his new album, 'Loverboy.'

"I wrote this album while I was on the road, for the most part, and I wrote it ... envisioning myself singing these songs to an audience, and having them sing along with me," he says. "I think it's really going to resonate with people."

Troubled actor Charlie Sheen has been relatively quiet (for him) over the past week as he prepares for the April 2 launch of his 20-date "Violent Torpedo of Truth/Defeat Is Not an Option Show," but he took some time out from his busy webcasting schedule on Monday to drop in on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!"

Kimmel was in the midst of interviewing outspoken Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban when the subject of Sheen came up. Cuban was praising the "Platoon" star and explaining that he has been in discussions with Sheen about a number of projects when Sheen burst onto the stage carrying a plastic shopping bag filled with swag and yelling, "How we doin'?" to the studio audience.

After planting a big, wet kiss on a surprised-looking Kimmel's face, a very excited Sheen soaked up the screams of the crowd, then signed a copy of musical guest Brett Dennen's album and handed it to an audience member before taking a seat to chat with Kimmel.

"You should borrow the band for the talk show that you're doing. It's always better with a band," Kimmel counseled Sheen. Sheen motioned toward Kimmel's band and joked, "Pack it up right now, dammit!"

"I can't stay ... sorry," Sheen told the disappointed audience. "I have a show to write, dammit!" He then reached into his bag and reminded Cuban that the billionaire had forgotten his Sheen merchandise when he visited the house earlier in the day.

Sheen pulled out a half-dozen promotional shirts and tossed them out to the studio audience, including one with an adorable kitten staring at the camera and the tag line, "I have tiger's blood in me."

After complimenting Kimmel for his "very moist" lips, Sheen presented the host with a special gift, a used-looking white coffee mug with a sticker of an adorable baby fox on it. "I'll let you figure it out, my man," he said when Kimmel questioned the present. And just like that, Sheen was off the set like a rocket, leaving confusion and some "Duh, Winning!" shirts in his wake.

After getting fired from "Two and a Half Men," rumors surfaced this week that Sheen was considering launching a late-night show on the Fox network, though Radar Online countered that Sheen's former bosses at CBS were possibly trying to lure him back to his old gig after this month's messy breakup.

Considering that he's toured the world, released three albums and made fans of such artists as John Mayer and Jason Mraz, California's Brett Dennen isn't doing too shabby. In 2008, Rolling Stone named him an "Artist to Watch," while Entertainment Weekly called him one of the "Guys on the Rise." His honest lyrics, upbeat melodies, and overall optimistic and laid back charm have turned Dennen into a star of the folk world.

Dennen returns in April with 'Loverboy,' and prior to that, he'll head to Austin to play SXSW. Before making the trip to Texas, Dennen talked to Spinner about why funerals should be celebrations, what he really wanted to be when he grew up and how food is similar to music.

Summertime means baseball games, backyard barbecues, dog days and, oh yeah -- Dave Matthews Band's annual amphitheater outing. It's a bit of an American tradition, as is their rotating special guest opener slot which has highlighted a number of integrity acts and "IT" bands over the years.

Looks like 2010 will stick with that exciting convention, as this year's support acts will include Raphael Saadiq, Brett Dennen, Gov't Mule, Ben Harper and the Relentless7 -- deep breath, OK, continue -- Zac Brown Band, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, Yonder Mountain String Band, the Felice Brothers, Robert Earl Keen, Martin Sexton, Amos Lee and Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears. Dave Matthews Band will launch an extensive North American summer tour, it was announced via a press release from the band's publicist on Tuesday (January 26). An online ticket request period begins on Thursday and continues through Monday at the band's Web site; tickets will go on sale to the general public on February 26.

Support acts on various dates include Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, Ben Harper and Relentless7, the Felice Brothers, Zac Brown Band, Gov't Mule, Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears, Brett Dennen, Raphael Saadiq and others; see the Web site for full details.

The group's 2009 album, Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King, is nominated for two Grammy awards, and the band will perform at the Grammys on Sunday night.

The band will launch a monthlong European tour in Hamburg, Germany, on February 16. North American tour dates are as follows:

Brett Dennen to Broadcast New Year's Eve Concert Online

Good news for Brett Dennen fans -- the folk singer has partnered with Livestream to broadcast a New Year's Eve performance from the Fox Theater in Oakland, Calif. Starting at 8:30PM PT, Dennen's fans can tune in to the exclusive show via the singer's Facebook page, his website and Livestream. The broadcast will also be available for iPhone users.

On December 30th at 3 PM PST, fans can also watch and participate in a special Q&A session with Dennen on Livestream from his private rehearsal for the show. Joining Dennen for the New Year's show, which was organized by the Life is Good Company, are fellow Brushfire Recording artist ALO. Several other local musicians from the Bay area are set to perform as well.
