  • Madonna – embrace the ballad

Madge? Adele? Singing ballads together? It might sound like a strange combination, but I'd welcome a change of pace

Reports suggesting that Madonna is planning to enlist Adele to write an album of "grown-up ballads" are likely to be met with a protracted groan from much of her fanbase, and I can see why. She's the woman responsible for Vogue, Like a Prayer and Ray of Light, so shouldn't she leave Adele songs to, you know, Adele? I'm a fan myself, and usually the prospect of a bangers-free Madonna album would fill me with dread too. But this time it's different.

  • Rick Ross Sues LMFAO

Rick Ross is apparently feeling confident after his recent court victory over cocaine kingpin “Freeway” Ricky Ross, in which a judge ruled that the rapper (born William Leonard Roberts) has the right to build a fictionalized identity around the drug dealer’s name for First Amendment reasons. Ross the rapper is feeling so confident, in fact, [...]

  • Rick Ross Sues LMFAO For Copyright Infringement

Rick Ross is suing LMFAO for copyright infringement, claiming the line “Everyday I’m shufflin’” from the duo’s 2011 smash “Party Rock Anthem” bites the “Everyday I’m hustlin’” hook off Rozay’s 2006 debut single “Hustlin’.” According to The Hollywood Reporter, a lawsuit filed in Florida argues the usage “is readily apparent… and constitutes, inter alia, the creation of an ... • Casimer & Casimir - "O Sweet Joe Pye" (stream)

Casimer Pascal and Vincent Casimir are an uncle/nephew duo, but they are as far away from LMFAO as you can get. In fact, Casimer & Casimir are so good at creating buoyant, timeless-sounding pop songs that even a passing mention of something as silly as that acronymed duo feels ridiculous.

"O Sweet Joe Pye" may have little company in the field of songs that are odes to weeds, but this makes the tune all the more stunning. Artists continue to use Motown motifs to varying effects, but its employment here gives the song additional layers. The good-natured, invigorating feel of the music gives Pascal's memories of growing up in a decaying Detroit a sugar-coating that's wholly satisfying if a little addictive. I've listened to "O…

  • Nicki Minaj, RedOne Accused Of Plagiarism In “Starships” Lawsuit

Nicki Minaj‘s “Starships” was a hugely successful cash-in on all of pop’s biggest fads in 2012: it had the bludgeoning fun-at-all-costs busyness of LMFAO/Black Eyed Peas, wubby brostep breakdowns, some ascendant EDM synths, a vaguely uplifting chorus and cartoonish rapping. But one source of that earworm’s massive pastiche may have been plagiarized, according to a ... More »
