  • Seven Davis Jr: Universes review – funk swagger and 90s house gets 21st-century makeover

    There’s nothing new about blowing the dust off an old genre and presenting it as something fresh. For Paloma Faith, Michael Bublé and just about any recent 90s-referencing guitar band, it’s the basis of an entire career. Thankfully singer-producer Seven Davis Jr also updates the styles he is reviving, dragging a mixture of funk swagger and 90s house into the 21st century on his debut. He recalls Prince on No Worries, while Fighters tiptoes around race issues and violence over sparse percussion and deep, ooh-ing backing vocals. When he sidesteps pop-song structures altogether, as on openers Imagination and Freedom, he moves into full-blown Flying Lotus-style genre-bending territory. Sunday Morning’s bouncing bassline and looping vocal refrain warrant repeated listens, but Davis still sounds best when sticking to the instrumental mode of his thumping 2014 PARTY EP.   • Afropunk adds Death Grips, Gary Clark Jr, Kelela, Candiria and more to NYC lineup, announces Atlanta festival

    The lineup for Brooklyn's 2015 Afropunk Festival was already pretty great, and now it got even better. Death Grips, Gary Clark Jr., Kelela, Jessie Boykins III, SZA, Candiria and more were added to the festival, which already included Lenny Kravitz, Grace Jones, Lauryn Hill, Kelis, Danny Brown, Suicidal Tendencies, Kele, Thundercat and more.

    This year also marks the first Afropunk Fancy Dress Ball, hosted by Grace Jones, Cakes Da Killa and MikeQ, proceeds from which will go toward the Afropunk Global Initiative. The party goes down August 21 at Commodore Barry Park, just ahead of the festival, which happens August 22-23 in the same park. Tickets for the ball are on sale now, and festival passes are still available.

  • Kamasi Washington touring, playing 2 nights at the Blue Note

    Jazz musician Kamasi Washington, who's on the new Kendrick Lamar album, the new Thundercat album, and has his own new album out now on Flying Lotus' Brainfeeder label, has announced a lengthy tour. He'll be in NYC for shows on August 24 & 25 at Blue Note Jazz Club. He plays 8 PM and 10:30 PM sets each night. Tickets for all four are on sale now. All dates are listed below.

    Speaking of hip hop-related shows happening at the Blue Note, pianist Robert Glasper is in the midst of a four-night run there. He plays 8 PM and 10:30 PM sets tonight (6/25) through Saturday (6/27). Tickets are still available.
