  • Ducktails: St Catherine review – carefree serenity undercut with melancholy

    (Domino)

Matt Mondanile might be best known as the guitarist in mellow indie rockers Real Estate, but he has been recording as Ducktails for longer, with an initial emphasis on more experimental, lo-fi amorphous jamming. As time has gone on, however, his two bands have undergone a gradual stylistic convergence: as with Real Estate at their best (see last year’s Atlas), the songs on this fifth album sound deceptively lightweight on the surface, but their air of carefree serenity is undercut with tugs of melancholy. The breezy Surreal Exposure is an unhurried delight, as is instrumental opener The Disney Afternoon. Throw in a couple of collaborations with Julia Holter, and you have an album that’s ideal for lazy summer afternoons.

  • Julia Holter announces new LP, 'Have You In My Wilderness,' shares video for new song "Feel You" (watch)

    by Andrew Sacher

The very prolific Julia Holter had been releasing an album a year since 2011's breakthrough Tragedy (and even more before that too), so it was a surprise when we didn't get a new one from her last year. But now she's finally ready to follow 2013's Loud City Song with a new album on September 25 via Domino. It's called Have You in My Wilderness and first single "Feel You" has some of her most belting vocal delivery yet. The bigger sound isn't as the expense of her arty tendencies and expertly layered sounds though. Hear it for yourself by watching the video below.

  • Julia Holter Announces 'Have You in My Wilderness,' Premieres Video

While Los Angeles singer-songwriter Julia Holter issued a 7-inch in 2014, she's now announced the proper follow-up to her 2013 breakthrough release, Loud City Song. Her fourth full-length album is called Have You in My Wilderness, and it sees release September 25 via Domino Records. A press release from the label suggests that the 10-song effort is Holter's "most intimate album yet." It was written and recorded over the last year and found the solo artist once again hitting a Los Angeles studio with producer/engineer Cole Greif-Neill. Described as "multi-layered and...

  • all-star Karen Dalton tribute out now; Michael Chapman, Peter Walker & more playing Tompkins Square anniversary

Michael Chapman - 'Fully Qualified Survivor' (1970) artwork)

Every artist has a piece of work that niggles them--something that they wish they could redo, given the chance. It's why Paul McCartney once reproduced Let It Be and why Kate Bush re-recorded Wuthering Heights for her best-of album. For the prolific Michael Chapman, that album is Window, the missing link in the series of Chapman's early albums being reissued by Light In The Attic Records. Window sits just after the previously released Fully Qualified Survivor and Rainmaker, right before Wrecked Again.

Some of music's most experimental minds have come together to release new music under the moniker Terepa, and it will arrive via Nicolas Jaar's Other People imprint this summer.   Terepa sees celebrated avant-garde artists like Laurel Halo and Julia Holter teaming up with mastering engineer Rashad Becker, Barcelona-based musician Lucrecia Dalt, Kohei Matsunaga (a.k.a. NHK'Koyxen), violinist Grégroire Simon and Charlotte Collin.   The seven-piece recorded the EP between Los Angeles, Berlin, Osaka and Paris — though none of the artists was in the same room at the same time. • Ducktails releasing 'St. Catherine' (listen to "Headbanging In The Mirror"), announce tour dates

    by Bill Pearis

Matt Mondanile will release his new album as Ducktails, titled St. Catherine, on July 24 via Domino. (Preorders are available.) He made the album primarily in Los Angeles (where he lives now) and it features appearances by James Ferraro and Julia Holter. The first track to be released is the hazy, soft-rock sounding "Headbanging In The Mirror." With its references to office life and living in New Jersey, this could have fit on Fountains of Wayne's first album. Stream it below.

  • GABI celebrated 'Sympathy' @ LPR w/ Vorhees & Solvey - pics

    photos by Amanda Hatfield

GABI, aka NYC musician Gabrielle Herbst, released her new album Sympathy (co-produced by Oneohtrix Point Never) earlier this month, and she played a release show for it last night (4/22) at Le Poisson Rouge. The new album's in a similar realm to Julia Holter's classical-inspired art pop, though a bit more on the operatic side, which really came across at last night's show. GABI stuck to vocals and keyboards, as she was backed by several musicians playing strings, horns, guitar, vibraphone (at one point with a bow), and more.
