  • Sharon Van Etten: I Don't Want to Let You Down

There are spaces of elegant starkness on Sharon Van Etten's new EP, and she fills them like a shade of blue yet to be invented.

The title track of Sharon Van Etten’s new EP is so effortlessly hummable, and so clear-eyed in its vulnerability, that it reminds of Aimee Mann’s contributions to the 1999 film Magnolia. Those songs captured our need for human connection with unguarded poignancy, not hesitating to explore the anxieties and fears that often go hand in hand. The pair met playing the coffee shops of LA and teamed up – not as a duo exactly, but as “two loners who happened to join forces”. That loneliness is what threads through this collection of songs, rehearsed in Caboor’s shed, home-recorded on a four-track, and self-released in 1984. It was, at that time, completely out of step with what record executives were seeking: a deliberately miserable folk-rocked two fingers to the music industry. And yet heard today, these songs remain absolute classics. This track…

  • Heather Woods Broderick – “Mama Shelter”

Heather Woods Broderick is a gentle, vulnerable singer-songwriter who renders enormous topics into delicate, soulful psych-folk. She’s been touring with Sharon Van Etten as a backup singer for several years and has been a part of groups like Horse Feathers and Efterklang, but is releasing a solo album all her own this summer. “Mama Shelter” […]
